Epworth, England: a small town with a big history
Epworth is a market town on the Isle of Axholme in North Lincolnshire, England. Its postcodes start with DN, the Doncaster postal area, which is why you’ll often see it written as “Epworth, Doncaster”. The town itself is in North Lincolnshire, and Doncaster is around 35 minutes away by car.
Epworth is where John and Charles Wesley, the founders of Methodism, were born and grew up. Their childhood home, Epworth Old Rectory, is open to visitors. Their father, Samuel Wesley, was rector of St Andrew’s Church for 40 years. In June 1742, when John Wesley wasn’t allowed to preach inside the church, he stood on his father’s tombstone in St Andrew’s churchyard and preached to the crowd outside (National Churches Trust). You can still see the tomb by the church today, along with the Wesley Memorial Methodist Church in the town centre.
Exploring the Isle of Axholme
The Isle of Axholme is flat, open farmland between the Rivers Trent, Idle and Don. It’s ideal for easy walks and cycling. Haxey, Westwoodside, Crowle and Owston Ferry are all close by. Crowle Peatland Railway and the Haxey, Westwoodside & Turbary Walk are two local favourites.
